I 26th September 1979 London Hospital Medical College |
On September 29th, 1979 G Coy joined the annals of Rugby Union history. We played a friendly against Cpl Granger's companions, come friends, from the London Hospital Medical College. This match was a practice for Colin's stag night which was the following week.
Thanks to lain Robertson's endurance, patience and crawling, G Coy started the match with 15 men and two substitutes, all clad in the Scots Guards' kilt. For several weeks prior to the game, Colin, lain, Fergie and Allan discussed tactics, counter tactics and counter, counter tactics, but all to no avail, for at half-time the invincible G Coy were slightly trailing 20-0. At half-time our gallant skipper, one Granger, shouted, bullied, urged, begged, exhorted the team to greater effort for the ensuing battle of the second half. The referee blew his whistle for the start of the second half and G Coy, with the strains of Highland Laddie in their cars, charged forward for the honour of the Regiment, but came back to earth when yet another try was scored against us. This game was not all one way and the Coy came close to scoring several times despite our line-out calls which were meant to confuse the enemy but were more confusing to ourselves. The spirit and guts were there but the skill was somewhat lacking and the London Hospital ran out eventual winners by lots and lots of points to them and not quite so many to us.
Our warmest thanks to London Hospital for being excellent hosts with plenty of sandwiches, beer, tea, beer, cakes and more beer. Our contribution to their Clubhouse was a London Scottish plaque which was gratefully received by their members. Many thanks to all who turned out, i.e., Allan Fay, Trevor Sheehan, Tim Lewis, Paul a (Ringer), Andy Hunter, Colin Granger, lain Robertson, Keith Ferguson, Steve Henwood, Dave MeNeill, Brian Welsh, Alan Pendleton, Steve Hirlehey, Gavin Dyer, Mick Ford, Robin Cameron and Steve Kempster. Also many thanks to those who failed to notify us. You know who you are!
Many thanks to the OC and the SPSI for all their help and support in organising this event.
N.B.: " Dear Bill, can I have my watch back? lain
