Murderball
- 2nd March 1980 Sutton & Epsom RFC Ground |
ON SUNDAY, March 2, 1980 The London Scottish again braved the elements and with boots and things in hand, sallied forth to do battle with Sutton and Epsom RFC This fixture was arranged by kind courtesy of Cpl Fenwick - thanks Arthur.
Anyway, back to the story. The serving Coy, after having spent the weekend braving the elements, risking life and limb (Bisley again) arrived at the enemy's en-campment and scrutinized them through a pint pot. Again our captain, one Granger, gave us our instructions (See Ex. Murder Ball, previous Gazette) and Sutton went promptly into the lead by 4 points At this point we delivered our counter-attack in the form of Clive Hexton who scored under the posts which was then converted by Paul Seymour. Score, so far, them 4, us 6. Hooray!
I would like to say that our intrepid band of warriors maintained this lead to the end, however this game was not to be the one sided affair it had been up to now. Sutton repaired their defences, fortified their attack and finished up winners by 46-6.
The highlight of the game, in the author's opinion, was Piper McPherson helping Sutton keep such a slender lead by snuffing out, with the best tackle of the game, Pte Hexton who was in full flow with no one to stop him from scoring.
Although the result suggests disaster, the lads kept trying and no one should feel ashamed about losing by such a high score, as they had more ringers than Bow Bells.
Those participating were:- Chris McPherson, Tim Lewis, Keith Ferguson, Colin Granger, Alan Pendleton, lain Robertson, Allan Fay, Steve Kempster, Steve Horwood, Paul Seymour, Brian Welsh, Steve Hirlehey, Clive Hexton, Robin Cameron and Jim Bohannon.
Again many thanks to the O.C. for letting the Coy participate and for running the line during the match.
Thanks also to our spectators who were:- Cpl lan Stewart and good lady Jane, Major Klepak (Colonial). P.S. don't need padding in our game, Lt Downey and Lt Watt. Lt Pearson also appeared (playing sir) and is up-graded in his map reading from 3 to 5.
